Sunset Crow Flights Put on a Fall Show Over Milwaukie

Milwaukie’s evening sky can become one of fall’s most dramatic local nature shows when streams of crows move toward their communal roost.

A recent Clackamas County crow-watching guide recommends arriving at Milwaukie Bay Park or Kellogg Creek Park about 15 to 30 minutes before sunset, when the first groups may begin crossing the sky.

The spectacle often builds gradually rather than arriving all at once, so give your eyes time to adjust, scan in several directions, and listen for calling birds that may reveal a flight path before it becomes obvious.

Both parks make the outing approachable for casual observers, with parking, restrooms, and benches available, while the riverfront setting adds changing light and open views even on a quieter bird night.

Check the city’s Milwaukie park information before leaving for current access details, and use the TriMet trip planner if you would rather reach the area without driving.

Bring a warm layer and keep expectations flexible, because weather, food sources, and disturbance can shift the birds’ timing or route from one evening to the next.

The best approach is simple and respectful: arrive before dusk, keep dogs close, avoid loud playback or chasing birds, and let the crows provide whatever version of the show they choose that night.

Binoculars can add detail but are not essential, since much of the experience comes from watching large groups organize, separate, and reform across a broad section of sky.

A phone photo may capture the scale, yet pausing to observe the birds’ direction and behavior often makes the outing more memorable than trying to document every passing flock.

Patience helps.
